Join us for this online workshop series that will build your understanding of Te reo Māori (language) and Te ao Māori (world view). This workshop will give you confidence and greater understanding of how to act, build relationships with Māori communities and embed Māori values in your workplace practices.

It is designed give you the confidence and knowledge on how to engage and conduct yourself when meeting or working with Māori. You will have the chance to learn the importance of Te reo Māori, pronunciation and some key phrases when working in a Māori context.


Sessions

This online workshop will run for 9 weeks starting from 3:45pm - 5:15pm each Wednesday.
Starting on Wednesday 24 July and finishing on Wednesday 18 September

Week 1

PRONUNCIATION

  • Commonly mispronounced words

Week 2

GREETINGS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
  • Introducing yourself
  • Communicating about where you are from

Week 3

PEPEHA
  • Mātauranga Māori - what is it and why is it the foundation of a Māori perspective

Week 4

NGĀ IWI MĀORI
  • Understanding Māori tribal structure and the importance of iwi and geographical boundaries
  • The important of establishing and maintaining connections from a Māori perspective
  • How to build authentic relationships with Māori stakeholders

Week 5

MĀORI GODS - WHO ARE THEY AND WHAT DO THEY REPRESENT?
  • Descriptive sentences

Week 6

MARAMAKA
  • Communicating about the day, month, weather

Week 7

UNDERSTANDING MĀORI VALUES:
  • Kaitiakitanga
  • Manaakitanga

Presenter

Tahau Thompson

Tahau is a Lead Consultant and facilitator of Poutawa Reo. He is a highly experienced te reo Māori teacher and kapa haka exponent and composer. Tahau’s area of work focuses on the facilitation of projects that uplift and revitalize the mana of Mātauranga Māori and development.

As well as delivering some of our online classes, Tahau is also the current Lecturer of Te Reo Māori at Waikato University..
He is a skilled orator and translator and is a graduate of Te Panekiretanga o te reo who brings his in- depth knowledge of all aspects of mātauranga and te reo Māori into his teaching and learning pedagogy.
