Nick Butcher, CTO of climate-tech startup CarbonCrop, will provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities of reforestation as a means to mitigate climate change, and the role of carbon markets in driving the necessary action and delivering better forests through aligning incentives with desired outcomes. Nick will particularly cover the opportunity for New Zealand landholders through the restoration of native forest on marginal land under the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme rules, and the potential to drive restoration and protection of established regenerating New Zealand Native forest through emerging voluntary carbon markets.

Speaker

Nick leads the engineering team at CarbonCrop, on their collective mission to help landholders suck another billion tons of carbon out of atmosphere and lock it up in regenerating forest. He's always been drawn to the potential of combining new technologies and new forms of collaboration to untangle and address the problem of climate change - in the past having worked on electric vehicle fast charging systems, renewable energy storage, and large scale solar power. Nick loves spending time in the beech forests of the Southern Alps with his partner and two young children, and wants to protect them for the future - combining artificial intelligence and carbon markets seems like it has to be part of a socially and environmentally responsible solution.
